"What changes have occurred in China as a result of the Tiananmen Square Massacre?"
The Tiannamen Square Massacre was an event where the Chinese troops drove tanks through Tiannamen Square killing hundreds of protestors. This sequence of event led to shocking many people in not only China, but Westerners as well. This protest was led by university students who were protesting for democracy. This made China look very bad. As a result of their actions, the US no longer wanted anything to do with China economically because of their violation of human rights. Alongside this change, there was also another major change in the mindset of the Chinese people. The 'tank man' is to thanks for this. A unnamed student stood in front of the driving tanks and stoppped them. This courage displayed that one single person is capable of making a difference. That one single idividual has a vioce that can be heard. This led to the perspective on human rights issues changing for many people.

"In your opinion, where does the 30 million deaths during the Great Leap Forward rank with other mass casualty events in the 20th century (ie. Hitler and Stalin attrocities)?
30 000 000 people died in the Great Leap Forward. This number of deaths is astonishing. When comparing the deaths in the Great Leap Forward cpmpared to Hitler's Holocaust, the Great Leap Forward had 6-11 times more deaths. Majority of these deaths were a result of a great famine. The Great Leap Forward was Mao's attempt to modernize China's economy. This atrocity was much different than other before it. The main reason of why it was so different is because it has nothing to do with war, it did not include any battles or bombs or tanks. Unlike Hitler and Stalin, I believe that it is was not Mao's intention to kill this many people. He simple wanted to out-do the American Economy. Mao simple got to caught up in his 5 year plans that he did not think about the consequences and how many people he was killing. Hitler and Stalin were out to get all of the poeple they killed. They did it on purpose and made speific plans about how to kill that many people as quickly and efficiantly as possible. Mao was just doing what he thought would make him a bettwe leader, where Hitler and Stalin with their cold hearts were killing millions of people because of a grudge they held towards them. "To what extent were the Japanese partially responsible for bringing communism to China?"
The Japanese were paritially responsible for bringing communism to China. At the time the Republic of China was being led by Sun Yat Sen and that lasted until 1925 when he died. After Sun Yat Sen died, Chiang Kai- Sheck became ruler. At the same time, Mao Zedong was the propaganda leader. Zedong wanted communism and stongly fostered it. Chiang tried to get rid of communsim but that simply led to Mao starting the Long March where he never have up on promoting communism and building the communist party. In 1931, Japan started to invade Manchuria to get rid of the CCP, but it only resulted in the CCP increasing its strength. During the Chinese Civil War, Mao and the CCP were able to free parts of notheren China from the Japanese. Chiang was too focused on Manchuria to think about stopping communism. Chiang eneded up loosing which allowed Mao to creat the People's Republic of China. If Chiang had not been so focused on Manchuria, he may have been able to stop communism and that is why the Japanese are partially the reason why China turned to communism. |
